Cash is anonymous, and free (i.e. not chargeable). Bitcoin is a good idea, but too damn early. It will not be mainstream for a LONG time. Too many ppl rely on cash that do not have the tech savvy or capability for bitcoin.

My 2 (real) penneth worth, now pass me that joint..... :-)

I think the encryption protocol on top of which Bitcoin works is ingenius and a real innovation, a solution to the Byzantine Generals problem.

However, Bitcoin as a form of alternative currency is even more unstable than traditional forms of payment, which makes it worthless for transacting like cash. Do you really want cash that is so unstable? Whose value is changing as you are using it? Not being controlled by a centralized authority is supposed to be an advantage to people actually needing and creating currency at the endpoints, but instead its value is determined by speculation like a highly risky asset or commodity.

Also, a small correction. You say "cash is our oldest form of exchange value." That is not correct. That would be credit, which predates writing. Cash wasn't introduced until well into the Axial age, likely in India first.

It is a dis-service to lump bitcoin together with "other currencies attempting to displace cash out there." It is singularly unique and not just because it "has garnered the most media attention in the past year."

When comparing it to Ven or Flatr or any even negotiable e-currency in the digicash mold, bitcoin stands as the first network-based system without a single point of failure for the authorities to attack. This is largely due to the distributed bitcoin nodes that solve the double-spending problem, something that previous decentralized systems were unable to do.
